A children's book
Once there was a pretty girl, she was roaming around the river. At sunset, her Mum called her in for dinner, so, she went back home to enjoy the warmth of food, filling all their hungry bellies. The next day she went back to the river.
She saw all the beautiful flowers, rotting and turning brown, the sad little leaves drooped down like they were depressed. She was disappointed and upset, and from the bottom of her heart, she decided to take care and nurse the baby plants every day. But little did she know a cursed sea octopus was watching her, and the tentacles that the octopus drew were always above her head.
The cursed octopus then drowned the girl the next day. From the blue skies, and above the white clouds, magical, mystical gods that were told to be a myth saw the dread that the octopus set upon her. She was granted the ability to become a mermaid. When a man sees a mermaid, he can become one too!
They soon realised that being around humans is far too dangerous so they hid inside the sea forevermore. They built a city underwater out of the kindness of their souls... Atlantis! But once a month they need to come for air, resting on the warm rocks.
That's how people who got lucky saw sightings of mermaids!
Now, believe and not believe in these myths, little do they know, that's how mermaids started.
